Adapting to deliver ‘fantastic’ independence

Palma VitaA multiple sclerosis sufferer is achieving 'fantastic' independence – through a new toilet.

Anne Hey lives alone in her Weaver Vale Housing Trust bungalow in Northwich, and, because of her illness, was struggling to use the conventional toilet in her small bathroom. The solution, undertaken under Occupational Therapist recommendation as part of the Trust's policy to make appropriate adaptations to tenants' homes, was to install one of Total Hygiene's Closomat Palma Vita 'wash and dry' toilets with arm supports.

Styled like a conventional WC, the Closomat also has in-built washing and drying facilities as standard, so the user does not have to use toilet tissue to clean after use. The optional arm supports can be raised or lowered easily as required to assist transfer to and from the toilet, and provide a lever for users with reduced muscle strength.

"It's fantastic, and has given me a great deal of confidence. Having the Closomat has made everything perfect in enabling me to live at home. The service from the Trust and Total Hygiene has been brilliant," says Anne.

"I was having trouble getting off the toilet; my bathroom is only small, so there wasn't the space to erect some sort of frame to help me. In the short time I have had the Closomat, it has made a massive difference to my daily life, particularly toilet transfers. I used to feel daunted about going to the toilet and the possibility of getting stuck and having to call for neighbours to help, but it's a lot better and easier now."

Closomat is the first choice for disabled people and their carers, to deliver quality, easy to use toileting solutions that bring greater independence, dignity and hygiene.
