Creating a level playing field for everyone
A park restoration aimed at delivering a city centre open environment that provides something for everyone has achieved its target- right through to using the toilet!
Brighton & Hove City Council has specifically redesigned The Level to provide play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities, including those in wheelchairs. And to ensure children and their carers can relax and enjoy their day to the full, its has ensured appropriate toilet facilities are provided for all – including a 'state of the art' Changing Places accessible, assisted toilet.
Supplied and installed by Closomat, the Changing Places toilet is bigger than a standard wheelchair-accessible toilet, and includes a hoist, height adjustable changing bench, height adjustable washbasin and Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita automatic shower (wash and dry) toilet. Changing Places toilets mean that the ¼million people who need the help of a carer to toilet, and for whom a standard 'disabled' toilet is unsuitable because of space and/or equipment, can go to the toilet in a suitable environment, instead of having to curtail their trip or be changed on the floor.
Councillor Pete West, chair of Brighton & Hove City Council's environment, transport and sustainability committee, said, "We worked closely with special interest groups to ensure the design of the Changing Places facility reflects the needs of those who will use it. Making The Level inclusive and accessible was at the heart of our redevelopment plans, so we are delighted that everyone can now enjoy visiting our newly restored park knowing that there are suitable toilet facilities for them."
The Changing Places toilet has been strategically located in the main toilet block by the new café facility in the centre of the park, and is accessed via a key available from the café. It compliments a raft of inclusive equipment at The Level, including level pathways, a wheelchair roundabout, basket swings, hammocks, a water play fountain and sound play. The toilet is the second Changing Places facility to be installed in the city, the other being t the Colonnade on the seafront.
Closomat is now the UK's leading supplier of Changing Places toilets, alongside accessible toilet facilities for in and out of the home. Over 600 Changing Places toilets are now open across the UK, the majority of which have been supplied by Closomat. The company is unique in being able to offer, in-house, design advice, supply, install, commissioning and ongoing service/maintenance, backed up by in-house project management of a Changing Places toilet or hygiene room.
