Adapt to helping elderly stay at home without help

A report has revealed that 1.4 million individuals reported having a medical Rose Thomcondition or disability that resulted in them requiring specially adapted accommodation, of whom 22 per cent considered their current home unsuitable. And authorities believe this is actually an underestimate!

By 2025 almost 1.5 million people aged 75 or over will be unable to manage at least one mobility/daily living activity on their own- specifically including going to the toilet on their own.

Rose Thoms LooClosomat is uniquely positioned to help social housing providers deliver appropriate bathroom adaptations.

“The Better Outcomes Lower Costs report has proven the benefit of providing a home adaptation in optimising effective use of budgets,” observes Robin Tuffley, Closomat marketing manager. “The most common adaptations are to bathrooms. As it is an area we deal with every working day, we are uniquely positioned to help Occupational Therapists on the most appropriate aid to deliver an appropriate solution for the recipient that will achieve best value ie work for them in the short, and long term.

“And maybe it is sometimes better to spend a little more at the outset and provide an adaptation that will work now, and in the longer term, rather than something that will only be effective for a few months.”

Installation of assistive technology such as a toilet lifter, and/or wash & dry toilet can help address the issue, reducing- or eliminating- the need for homecare provision, and enabling the recipient to undertake personal care independently, often for years to come.

Its Aerolet toilet lift is available in both vertical and tilt variants to address specific balance and flexibility considerations, and can be fitted over most WCs to provide safe, stable transfer on and off the lavatory. Closomat’s Palma Vita wash & dry toilet is the only one of its kind developed specifically for disabled people, and capable of being easily adapted as needs change over time- addition of support arms, operating mechanisms, different seats.

The company also offers a body drier, shower seats, ceiling track and mobile hoists, height adjustable washbasins, adult-sized height adjustable changing benches.
